January 8, 1919


Went to railhead about 9 o’clock. Got back about 1 o’clock. Wrote letters home. Got one from Pearl. About 8 leaves [?] in today. Mostly everyone in Cöln today. Went to bed early. 41st Div coming up to relieve us.

    Could this read “Got one from Pearl about 8 barns in today”? I think the stop after Pearl may be bleed through from the other side of the page (I can see the shadow outline of a sentence ending).

    Would Pearl be on a farm? Would barns be a topic of epistolary conversation? Probably more interesting than 8 leaves anyway.
